Why kids love DrawAlong
And why their grown-ups keep it on the iPad. In their words.

We have twins and one iPad. They take turns on this without fighting, which never happens with anything else.

I didn’t think it would be much different from the other drawing apps we’ve tried. They’re either colouring in or too hard for a six year old. This one actually shows her where to draw each line and tells her if it’s a bit off. She did a cat, then a dog, then wanted to do the dog again because the tail wasn’t right. We’ve printed a few and put them on the fridge.

Whoever made this has thought about everything. It tells her when a line is a bit off, it waits for her, it doesn’t need an account, and it works on the old iPad. Little things, but they add up.

Confidence, one small win at a time
Most drawing apps hand a child a blank page and hope. DrawAlong breaks a picture into single strokes, checks each one, and tidies it as it lands - so the finished drawing always looks like the thing it was meant to be. That is the difference between a child who says “I can’t draw” and one who says “look what I made”.
A wobbly line is accepted, not corrected. There is no timer, no score and no buzzer, because the point is not accuracy - it is finishing something you are proud of and wanting to do it again tomorrow.
Why drawing mattersFine motor control
Holding a line and controlling a curve is pre-writing practice in disguise - the same control handwriting asks for.
Focus and following directions
One instruction at a time, each with a visible result. Attention is rewarded immediately rather than at the end.
Real confidence
The drawing works out every time, so the child learns that trying leads somewhere - the opposite of a blank page.
Screen time you feel good about
No ads, no autoplay, no infinite feed. It ends with a picture on the fridge instead of a scroll.
No screen? Print it instead
Every drawing is also a free coloring sheet, and each themed pack is one PDF with a coloring page, a drawing guide and a trace page. For the car, the waiting room and the classroom wall.
Teaching a whole class?
Everything here is already free to use at school - the guided drawings on classroom tablets or the whiteboard, and the printable packs for early finishers, wet-weather lunches and relief days.
A proper classroom version is being built for the start of next year: one teacher account, a join code on the board, no student logins and nothing collected about a child. Put your name down and help shape it.
Common questions
What age is DrawAlong for?
It is built for children aged 4 to 8. Younger children usually want a grown-up beside them for the first few drawings; by six or seven most children run it themselves. There are 97 drawings, and the simplest are five or six lines long.
Is DrawAlong free?
Yes. Every guided drawing, every written tutorial and every printable coloring page is free, and you do not need an account to start drawing. Signing up is only for saving drawings across devices.
Do we need to download an app?
No. DrawAlong runs in the browser on a tablet, phone or computer. There is nothing to install and nothing to update.
What happens if my child draws a wobbly line?
It still counts. Each stroke only has to roughly follow the guide, and once accepted it is tidied up so it looks clean. There is no buzzer and no score - a line that misses just gets a gentle "try that one again".
What can my child draw?
There are 97 subjects across animals, objects, food, characters, plus letters, numbers and shapes for handwriting practice. Each one is taught one stroke at a time, from a five-line apple to a forty-nine-line pirate.
Can we print the drawings instead?
Yes. Every subject has a free printable coloring page, and a three-page PDF pack with the coloring sheet, a six-step drawing guide and a trace page. Themed packs collect a whole topic in one download.
Can I use DrawAlong with my class?
Yes. DrawAlong for Schools gives a teacher one account, a QR code for the board and no student logins: the class scans, taps their names and draws, and the drawings arrive on the teacher's screen. The printable packs and guided drawings are free to use at school as well.
Does guided drawing help with handwriting?
It practises the same things handwriting needs: holding a line, controlling a curve, and finishing a shape you planned. It is pre-writing practice that feels like play rather than a worksheet - not a replacement for handwriting teaching, but useful groundwork.
Can my child keep their drawings?
Finished drawings save to My Drawings. Signed out they live in that browser; sign in free and they follow your child to any device. Saved drawings can also become the pages of a storybook.
