How to Draw a Cat: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids

How to draw a cat in 11 easy steps

Step-by-step cat drawing for kids · DrawAlong

Cats are one of the very best first drawings for kids: a circle for the head, two pointy ears, a round body, whiskers and a curvy tail. If your child can draw a circle (even a wobbly one!), they can draw a cat.

Follow the eleven simple steps below, or better yet, tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide your child through every line on screen, checking each one, cheering them on, and letting them color the finished cat at the end.

How to draw a cat, step by step

  1. 1Draw a big circle for the head

Start with a big circle near the top of your page. This is the cat’s head. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfectly round. Wobbly circles make charming cats.

  2. 2Add a pointy left ear

Add a pointy triangle on the top-left of the head for the first ear.

  3. 3Add a pointy right ear

Add a matching pointy triangle on the top-right. Now your cat can hear the treat bag opening.

  4. 4Draw a round body under the head

Draw a big, round body under the head, like an egg sitting under the circle.

  5. 5Give your cat a curvy tail

Give your cat a long, curvy tail sweeping out from the body. Cats are proud of their tails, so make it swoosh!

  6. 6Draw the left eye

Draw a small circle inside the head for the left eye.

  7. 7Draw the right eye

Draw another small circle for the right eye.

  8. 8Add a little triangle nose

Add a tiny triangle nose right in the middle of the face, pointing down.

  9. 9Draw a happy smile

Draw a happy "w"-shaped smile under the nose.

  10. 10Draw a whisker on the left cheek

Draw a whisker sticking out from the left cheek.

  11. 11Draw a whisker on the right cheek

Draw a whisker on the right cheek to match. Meow, you drew a cat!

Time to color!

Orange tabby, gray, black, or rainbow. There’s no wrong cat color. Try a pink nose and green eyes for a classic storybook look.

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

What age is this cat drawing tutorial for?
It’s designed for kids roughly 4-8 years old, but younger kids can do it with a little help and older kids can use it as a quick warm-up. Every line is simple: circles, triangles and curves.
What if my child’s lines are wobbly?
Wobbly is wonderful! In the live DrawAlong version, lines just need to roughly follow the guide. The app tidies each accepted line so the finished cat always looks great, which keeps kids confident and motivated.
Do I need any special materials?
On paper: any pencil or crayon. On screen: nothing at all. The live tutorial runs free in your browser on a tablet, phone or computer, and fingers work great.
