How to draw a baby chick, step by step

  1. 1Draw one big fluffy circle for the whole chick

Start with one big fluffy circle right in the middle of the page. That single circle is the whole chick, head and body together!

  2. 2Add a tiny wing bump on the left side

Add a tiny wing bump on the left side. Just a small curve poking out, like the chick is waving hello.

  3. 3Add a matching wing bump on the right

Add a matching wing bump on the right side. Two little wings, even if they are too small to fly with yet.

  4. 4Draw a little stick leg with a tiny foot

Draw a little stick leg coming down from the bottom, with a tiny foot at the end. Chick legs are wonderfully skinny.

  5. 5Draw the other stick leg so it can stand

Draw the other stick leg next to it so your chick can stand up straight.

  6. 6Draw a little triangle beak in the middle

Draw a little triangle beak right in the middle of the circle, pointing down and ready to cheep.

  7. 7Dot a small round eye above the beak

Dot a small round eye just above the beak on the left.

  8. 8Dot the other eye to match

Dot the other eye on the right to match. Now your chick can see the whole barnyard.

  9. 9Add a fluffy tuft on top. Cheep cheep!

Finish with a fluffy little tuft on top of the head. Cheep cheep, your baby chick is done!

Time to color!

Go classic: sunny yellow for the fluffy body, wings and tuft, a bright orange beak, and little orange legs. A soft green grass line underneath makes it feel like springtime!

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

How do you draw a simple baby chick?
One big circle does almost all the work. The whole chick is a single fluffy circle, then two tiny wing bumps, two stick legs, a triangle beak, two dot eyes and a tuft on top. Nine short steps and it is done.
Is this a good first drawing for little kids?
It is one of the best. With only nine steps and no tricky shapes, kids as young as four can finish the whole chick in a few minutes. DrawAlong checks each stroke gently, so wobbly circles are welcome, chicks are supposed to be fluffy.
Is the baby chick good for Easter or spring drawing?
Perfect for it. The chick is a springtime favorite, and kids love adding a cracked egg shell, some grass or a mama hen freehand once the guided steps are finished.
