How to draw a cow face, step by step

  1. 1Draw a great big round head, nice and wide

Start with a great big round head, nice and wide. Cows have wonderfully wide faces, so let your circle stretch out sideways.

  2. 2Draw a big oval muzzle across the bottom

Draw a big oval muzzle across the bottom of the head. This is where the nostrils and smile will go.

  3. 3Add a floppy ear on the left side

Add a floppy ear sticking out on the left side. Cow ears flop sideways like little airplane wings.

  4. 4Add a floppy ear on the right side

Add a matching floppy ear on the right side so your cow can hear you say moo.

  5. 5Draw a tiny curved horn on the left

Draw a tiny curved horn on top of the head, on the left. Just a small hook, nothing scary.

  6. 6Draw a tiny horn on the right

Draw a tiny horn on the right to match. Now your cow has a proper pair.

  7. 7Draw a big wiggly spot over one eye

Draw a big wiggly spot over one eye. Every cow has its own spots, so let this one be as wobbly as you like.

  8. 8Draw a gentle round left eye

Draw a gentle round left eye on the face.

  9. 9Draw the right eye inside the spot

Draw the right eye inside the wiggly spot. Cows have the kindest eyes, so keep them soft and round.

  10. 10Draw a little nostril dot on the muzzle

Draw a little nostril dot on the left side of the muzzle.

  11. 11Draw another nostril next to it

Draw another nostril next to it. Cows have big friendly noses for sniffing hay.

  12. 12Add a happy smile. Moo moo!

Finish with a happy smile curving across the muzzle. Moo moo, your cow is done!

Time to color!

Classic look: a white face with a black wiggly spot, a soft pink muzzle with darker pink nostrils, and creamy tan horns. Brown and white works beautifully too!

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

How do you draw a simple cow face?
Start with one big wide circle for the head, then add an oval muzzle across the bottom. Floppy ears, tiny horns, a wiggly spot, two eyes, two nostrils and a smile finish it off. Twelve small steps and no tricky lines anywhere.
Why draw just the face instead of the whole cow?
The face is where all the personality lives, and it skips the hardest part of animal drawing, the legs. Kids get a big, expressive picture in a few minutes, and confident artists can always add a body freehand afterward.
Do the spots have to look a certain way?
Not at all. Real cow spots come in every shape imaginable, so a wobbly or lopsided spot is actually more realistic. DrawAlong checks each stroke gently, and wiggly lines are exactly right here.
