How to draw a fox, step by step

  1. 1Draw the sitting body, down the chest and around the back

Start with the sitting body: draw one long line down the chest, along the bottom and up around the back. Think of a cozy fox-shaped hill.

  2. 2Draw the head with a pointy snout, all the way around

Draw the head on top, sliding out to a pointy snout on the left and curving all the way back around. Foxes have wonderfully pointy faces.

  3. 3Add a tall pointy ear

Add a tall pointy ear on top of the head, like a party hat.

  4. 4Add another pointy ear beside it

Add a second pointy ear right beside it. Now your fox is listening.

  5. 5Draw one big bushy tail sweeping around the front

Here comes the best part: draw one big bushy tail starting at the back and sweeping all the way around the front, like a fluffy scarf.

  6. 6Draw a small curve across the tail for the white tip

Draw a small curve across the end of the tail. That marks the snowy white tip every fox is famous for.

  7. 7Draw a curve for the fluffy white chest

Draw a long curve down from the head to the bottom of the body. That is the fluffy white chest.

  8. 8Draw a straight line for the front leg

Draw one straight line down the middle for the front leg. Nice and steady.

  9. 9Draw a little round eye

Give your fox a little round eye near the snout.

  10. 10Add a tiny triangle nose on the snout

Add a tiny triangle nose right at the pointy end of the snout. Boop!

  11. 11Draw a happy smile. Hello, fox!

Finish with a happy smile under the nose. Hello, fox!

Time to color!

Classic look: a warm orange body, head, ears and tail, with a white chest, tummy and tail tip, plus a black nose, then try an autumn forest background with a few falling leaves!

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

Is a fox hard for kids to draw?
It looks harder than it is. The sitting pose does most of the work: the body is one long curve, the tail is one big sweep, and the ears are simple triangles. Most kids can finish all eleven steps in a few minutes.
What is the trickiest step in this fox drawing?
The head, because it stretches out into a pointy snout before curving back around. Go slowly and remember it is just one loop with a point on the left side. DrawAlong checks each stroke gently, so a wobbly snout still counts.
Can we draw the fox on a tablet or phone?
Yes. DrawAlong runs right in the browser, so kids can draw the fox with a finger or stylus on any tablet or phone, no downloads needed. To follow along on paper, any pencil and crayons will do.
