How to Draw a House: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids

How to draw a house in 7 easy steps

Step-by-step house drawing for kids · DrawAlong

A house is a perfect first drawing because it is made of shapes kids already know: a big square for the wall, a triangle for the roof, and little rectangles for the door and chimney. Put them together and you get a cozy home with smoke-ready chimney and windows to peek out of.

Follow the seven steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go.

How to draw a house, step by step

  1. 1Draw the big square wall

Start with the biggest shape: a big square wall, nice and wide.

  2. 2Draw the pointy roof on top

Draw the pointy roof on top. It sticks out a little past the wall on both sides, like a hat that is slightly too big.

  3. 3Draw the chimney on the roof

Add the chimney on the left side of the roof: two short lines going up with a little lid across the top.

  4. 4Draw the door in the middle

Draw the door in the middle of the wall, straight up on both sides with a round top like an archway.

  5. 5Add a little round doorknob

Add a little round doorknob near the edge of the door. Now you can get in!

  6. 6Draw a square window on the left

Draw a square window on the left side of the door.

  7. 7Draw a square window on the right

Draw a matching square window on the right side. Welcome home!

Time to color!

Classic look: a sunny yellow wall, coral red roof, dark brown door with a golden doorknob, sky blue windows and a brown chimney.

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

Is a house a good drawing for young kids?
Yes, it is one of the friendliest first drawings around. Ages 4 and up can follow along because every part is a simple shape: squares, a triangle and one round doorknob.
What if the lines come out wobbly?
Wobbly is welcome. DrawAlong checks each line gently and accepts strokes that are close, not perfect. A slightly crooked roof just makes the house look more storybook.
Do we need any special materials?
Nothing at all. The guided version runs free in your browser on a tablet, phone or computer, and you color by tapping. On paper, any pencil and crayons work great.
