Follow the eleven steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go.
How to draw a koala, step by step
1Draw a big round circle for the head
Start with the biggest shape: one big round circle. That is the koala's head, and koalas are mostly head!
2Draw a huge fluffy ear bump on the left side of the head
Draw a huge fluffy ear bulging out from the left side of the head. Do not be shy, koala ears are enormous.
3Draw another huge fluffy ear on the right
Draw another huge fluffy ear on the right side to match. Now the head looks nice and wide.
4Draw a smaller curve inside the left ear
Draw a smaller curve inside the left ear. That is the soft fuzzy part inside.
5Draw a smaller curve inside the right ear
Do the same inside the right ear, one smaller curve to make it fluffy.
6Draw a small round body under the head
Under the head, draw a small round body, like a little bean sitting down. Koalas keep things compact.
7Add a wee round tail on the side of the body
Add a wee round tail bump on the side of the body. Koala tails are tiny, so just a little curve will do.
8Draw the left eye
Draw a small round eye on the left side of the face.
9Draw the right eye
Draw a matching round eye on the right side.
10Draw a big oval nose in the middle
Now the most important part: draw a big oval nose right in the middle of the face. That big nose is what makes a koala a koala.
11Add a smile. Hello, koala!
Finish with a gentle smile under the nose. Hello, koala!
Time to color!
Classic look: a soft grey head, ears and body, lighter grey or pink inside the ears, a dark grey nose and a white tummy, then add a green eucalyptus branch for your koala to hug!
In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a koala a good first animal for young kids to draw?
- Yes, it is one of the friendliest. The koala is really just circles: a big one for the head, two bumps for the ears, a small one for the body and an oval for the nose. Kids as young as four can follow all eleven steps.
- What if the ears come out different sizes?
- That is completely fine. Real koala ears are scruffy and uneven anyway. DrawAlong checks each stroke gently, so a bigger left ear or a wobbly circle still counts, and honestly it just makes the koala cuter.
- What do we need to get started?
- Nothing extra. DrawAlong runs right in the browser, so kids can draw with a finger or stylus on a tablet or phone. To follow along on paper, any pencil and some grey and pink crayons will do.
