How to draw a penguin in 9 easy steps

Follow the nine steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go.
How to draw a penguin, step by step
1Draw the big tall body, like an egg with a flat bottom
Start with the biggest shape: one tall egg standing up, round on top and flat along the bottom. That is the whole penguin body.
2Draw a tall oval inside for the white tummy
Draw a tall oval inside the body for the tummy. Let it float inside, it should not touch the outline.
3Draw the left flipper, swooping down like a slide
Add the left flipper: start at the shoulder, swoop down and out, then curve back in to the body.
4Draw the right flipper to match
Add a matching flipper on the right side. Now your penguin is ready to waddle.
5Draw a little sideways diamond for the beak
Draw a small sideways diamond in the middle of the face. That is the beak!
6Draw a small bump at the bottom for the left foot
Draw a little bump under the bottom line for the left foot.
7Draw another bump for the right foot
Draw another little bump next to it for the right foot.
8Draw a small circle above the beak for the left eye
Draw a small circle above the beak for the left eye.
9Draw the right eye. Hello, penguin!
Draw another circle for the right eye. Hello, penguin!
Time to color!
Classic look: an almost-black body and flippers, a snowy white tummy and eyes, and a bright orange beak and feet, then try an icy blue background!
In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a penguin a good drawing for young kids?
- Yes, it is one of the easiest animals there is. The whole penguin is one big egg shape plus a few simple additions, so kids as young as four can finish it and get a picture that really looks like a penguin.
- What if the lines come out wobbly?
- Wobbly is fine! DrawAlong checks each stroke gently, so a shaky egg shape or a lopsided flipper still counts. Penguins waddle anyway, a slightly wobbly one just has more personality.
- What do we need to get started?
- Nothing extra. DrawAlong runs right in the browser, so kids can draw with a finger or stylus on a tablet or phone. To follow along on paper, any pencil and crayons will do.
