How to Draw a Shark: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids
How to draw a shark in 9 easy steps
A shark is a fantastic drawing for kids because the whole thing is really one big torpedo shape: pointy nose at the front, a moon shaped tail at the back, and a tall fin on top. Add a big friendly smile with a few pointy teeth and this shark looks more like a buddy than a beast.
Follow the nine steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go.
How to draw a shark, step by step
1Draw the big shark body with a pointy nose and a moon shaped tail
Start with the biggest shape: one long body line with a pointy nose on the left, a smooth back, and a moon shaped tail on the right, all the way around and back to the nose.
2Draw the tall fin on top of the back
Draw the famous fin on top of the back, like a tall triangle with a little lean.
3Draw the little fin under the tummy
Add a smaller fin under the tummy, pointing down and back like a flipper.
4Draw a long tummy line back to the tail
Draw one long line along the tummy from the smile side back to the tail. That is where the shark's light belly goes.
5Draw a big friendly smile from the nose
Now the fun part: draw a big friendly smile curving from the tip of the nose down to the tummy.
6Add three pointy teeth along the smile
Add three pointy teeth hanging from the smile, like a tiny zigzag.
7Draw a little curved gill behind the head
Draw a small curved gill behind the head, like a skinny banana standing up.
8Add one more gill right next to it
Add one more gill right next to the first one. Sharks breathe through these!
9Draw a round eye. Your shark is done
Finish with a round eye near the nose. Say hello to your friendly shark!
Time to color!
Classic shark colors: a sky blue body with a cream tummy, deep blue fins and gills, white teeth, and a pink smile. A deep blue background bucket turns the whole page into ocean.
In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a shark a good drawing for young kids?
- Yes, it is a great one for ages 4 to 8. The body is one big smooth shape, the fins are simple triangles, and the smile and teeth are the only small parts. Most kids finish it in a few minutes and it really looks like a shark.
- What if my lines come out wobbly?
- Wobbly lines are completely fine. DrawAlong checks each stroke gently and generously, so a wiggly back or a lopsided fin still counts. Real sharks are not perfectly smooth either.
- What do we need to get started?
- On paper, just a pencil and something to color with. Or draw it right in your browser: DrawAlong works on tablets, phones and computers, and when the last line is done every part becomes tap-to-color, including the ocean background.
