How to draw a bear, step by step

  1. 1Draw a big circle for the head

Start with a big circle near the top of the page. That is the bear's whole head.

  2. 2Add a round ear bump on the left side of the head

Add a round ear bump on the left side of the head. Bears have wonderfully round ears, so let it curve like half a cookie.

  3. 3Add a matching ear bump on the right

Now add a matching ear bump on the right side. Two ears means your bear can hear the whole forest.

  4. 4Draw the big sitting body under the head

Draw the big sitting body under the head. Swoop down from one side, round out the bottom, and come back up the other side.

  5. 5Draw a little paw bump at the bottom left

Draw a little paw bump at the bottom left of the body. Just a small curve, like a mitten peeking out.

  6. 6Draw a paw bump at the bottom right

Draw another paw bump at the bottom right. Now your bear is sitting comfortably on both paws.

  7. 7Draw a big oval on the tummy for the belly

Draw a big oval in the middle of the tummy for the belly. Let it float inside the body without touching the sides.

  8. 8Draw an oval on the face for the muzzle

Draw a smaller oval on the lower half of the face. That is the muzzle, where the nose and smile will live.

  9. 9Draw the left eye

Draw a small circle above the muzzle for the left eye.

  10. 10Draw the right eye

Draw another small circle for the right eye. Keep them level so your bear looks right at you.

  11. 11Add a little triangle nose

Add a little triangle nose at the top of the muzzle, pointing down like a tiny slice of pie.

  12. 12Draw a big friendly smile. Hello, bear!

Finish with a big friendly smile curving under the nose. Hello, bear!

Time to color!

Classic look: warm brown fur for the head, ears and body, a honey-colored belly and muzzle, and a dark brown nose. Or go polar with white fur and an icy blue background!

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

How do you draw a simple bear?
Think in circles. A simple bear is one round head, two ear bumps, a big rounded body and an oval belly, then eyes, a triangle nose and a smile. Every line in this tutorial is a curve or a small shape, so there is nothing tricky to get wrong.
Is this bear drawing easy enough for a five year old?
Yes. It is rated beginner, and the twelve steps are all short strokes with generous wiggle room. DrawAlong checks each line gently, so a slightly lumpy circle still counts as a perfectly good bear head.
What kind of bear is this?
Whatever kind your child wants! Colored brown it is a grizzly, black makes a black bear, white makes a polar bear, and a light tan bear with a round belly makes a very convincing teddy.
