How to Draw a Snake: Easy Step-by-Step for Kids
How to draw a snake in 9 easy steps
A snake is a wonderful drawing for practicing wiggly lines: it is really just one big round head and one long body that slides back and forth like the letter S, ending in a pointy tail. Add two round eyes, a forked tongue and a few stripes, and your friendly snake is done.
Follow the nine steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go.
How to draw a snake, step by step
1Draw the round head and the long bendy body, all the way to the pointy tail
Start with the big one: draw the round head, then keep going into the long bendy body. It slides to the right, swoops back to the left, and slides right again down to a pointy tail.
2Draw the first round eye
Draw the first round eye in the head.
3Draw the second round eye
Add the second round eye right next to it.
4Draw the tongue poking out, with the top fork
Draw the tongue poking out of the head, with the top fork at the end.
5Add the bottom fork of the tongue
Add the bottom fork so the tongue splits in two, just like a real snake.
6Draw a short stripe across the first bend
Draw a short stripe across the first bend of the body.
7Draw a stripe across the middle of the body
Draw a straight stripe across the middle part of the body.
8Add another stripe next to it
Add another stripe right next to it to make a band.
9Draw a stripe across the last bend
Finish with a stripe across the last bend. Your snake is ready to slither!
Time to color!
A green snake with yellow bands, dark eyes and a coral tongue is the classic look, but purple or orange snakes are just as fun.
In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a snake a good drawing for young kids?
- Yes, it is one of the friendliest drawings for ages 4 to 8. The whole snake is one long wiggly line plus a few circles and short stripes, so there are no tricky corners, and the finished picture always looks like a snake.
- What if the long body line comes out wobbly?
- Wobbly is perfect for a snake, since real snakes wiggle anyway. The app checks each line gently and gives plenty of room, so a shaky hand still passes and every accepted line feels like a win.
- What do we need to get started?
- On paper, just a pencil and some crayons. Or use DrawAlong right in the browser on a tablet, phone or computer: no downloads, and a finger or stylus works great for the guided version.
