How to draw a pumpkin, step by step

  1. 1Draw the big round pumpkin with a little dip on top

Start with the biggest shape: a big round pumpkin that is wider than it is tall, with a little dip in the top and a tiny dip in the bottom.

  2. 2Draw a curved line down the left side of the pumpkin

Draw a curved line from the top of the pumpkin down to the bottom, a little left of the middle. Let it bow out to the left like a banana.

  3. 3Draw a matching curved line down the right side

Draw a matching curved line on the right side, bowing out to the right. Now your pumpkin has a middle section.

  4. 4Add one more curved line near the left edge

Add one more curved line near the left edge, from the top of the pumpkin down to the bottom.

  5. 5Add one more curved line near the right edge

Add one more curved line near the right edge. Look at that, your pumpkin has puffy sections just like a real one.

  6. 6Draw the short chunky stem on top

Draw the short chunky stem sitting in the dip on top: up one side, straight across, and back down.

  7. 7Add a curly vine next to the stem

Add a curly vine springing out from the top of the stem, like a little pig tail.

  8. 8Draw a little leaf on the other side of the stem

Finish with a pointy leaf on the other side of the stem. Your pumpkin is ready for the patch!

Time to color!

Classic look: a bright orange pumpkin with a green stem, vine and leaf. For a silly twist, try a purple or sky blue pumpkin instead!

In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pumpkin a good drawing for young kids?
Yes, it is one of the friendliest drawings there is. It is mostly one big round shape plus four curvy lines, so kids as young as 4 can finish it, and it never goes out of season: Halloween, Thanksgiving, or any fall day.
What if the lines come out wobbly?
Wobbly is welcome. Real pumpkins are bumpy and uneven, so wobbly lines actually make it look more natural. The app checks each stroke gently and accepts anything close, not just perfect lines.
What do we need to get started?
Nothing extra. DrawAlong runs right in the browser on a tablet, phone or computer, and kids draw with a finger or stylus. On paper, a pencil and something orange to color with is all it takes.
