A cupcake is one of the sweetest first drawings a kid can make: a little paper cup, a big swirl of frosting, a cherry on top and a handful of tiny sprinkles. This easy cupcake drawing for kids is built from simple shapes, so even young artists end up with a treat that looks good enough to eat.
Follow the ten steps below on paper, or tap "Draw it live" and DrawAlong will guide each line on screen, checking every stroke as you go.
How to draw a cupcake, step by step
1Draw the paper cup, wide at the top with a curvy bottom
Start with the paper cup: a wide shape that is bigger at the top than the bottom, with a gently curved base.
2Draw the big swirly frosting on top of the cup
Draw the big swirly frosting on top of the cup: three puffy layers that get smaller as they climb up to a point.
3Draw the round cherry on the very top
Add a round cherry sitting right on the tip of the frosting.
4Add the tiny cherry stem
Give the cherry a tiny stem, one short curve is all it needs.
5Draw a pleat line down the left side of the cup
Draw a pleat line from the top of the cup down to the bottom on the left side.
6Draw a pleat line down the middle of the cup
Add another pleat line straight down the middle of the cup.
7Draw a pleat line down the right side of the cup
Draw one more pleat line on the right side. Now the cup looks like real baking paper.
8Add a tiny sprinkle on the frosting
Time for sprinkles! Add one tiny sprinkle low on the frosting.
9Add another sprinkle higher up
Add a second sprinkle a little higher up.
10Add one last sprinkle near the top
Finish with one last sprinkle near the top. Your cupcake is ready!
Time to color!
Try a sky blue cup with pink frosting, a bright red cherry and sprinkles in yellow, green and purple, or invent your own bakery flavor.
In the live version, coloring is tap-to-fill: pick a color, tap a part, done.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a cupcake a good drawing for young kids?
- Yes, it is a great pick for ages 4 to 8. The cup is one simple shape, the frosting is one big swoopy line, and everything after that is a small easy detail, so kids see progress fast.
- What if the lines come out wobbly?
- Wobbly is fine! DrawAlong checks each stroke gently and accepts lines that are close, not perfect. Frosting is supposed to look a little swirly anyway.
- What do we need to get started?
- Nothing extra. DrawAlong runs right in the browser on a tablet, phone or computer, and kids draw with a finger or stylus. For paper drawing, any pencil and crayons will do.
